The cave paintings of the Gravylithic Period often depicted strange, otherworldly creatures like the ones pictured here. The fossil record does not contain any known examples of actual, living creatures resembling those shown in the paintings, so it is unknown what the inspiration for the figures was, but paintings from a period spanning thousands of years are stunningly consistent in their depictions of the mysterious beings. There seems to exist a complex & rigid taxonomy detailing some 23,000 distinct species with subtle but consistent variations between them. It is unknown if these creatures were part of the mythology of some Gravylithic culture, an encyclopedia of some ancient extraterrestrial visitor, or a symptom of some mental illness in the collective consciousness.
